The great city of Samara lies at the confluence of the Volga and Samara Rivers. Originally a fortress settlement built in 1586. As the city grew, it became more important as a port giving both diplomatic and economic links between Russia and the East. During the late 19th and early 20th century when these photographs were taken, the city was growing still faster with a number of factories being established in the city, mainly, bread and milling, brewing, ironworks and a confectionary factory.
