ôîòî: Helm and figurehead from the RMS Mona’s Queen at the Operation Dynamo museum. 14-7-2022

Îïèñàíèå: Launched in April 1934, the RMS Mona’s Queen was a passenger steamer that could accommodate 2,486 passengers and 83 crew. Built for the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company, she served with them on their main route from Douglas to Liverpool. In 1935 she appeared in the George Formby movie “No Limit”, a musical comedy set at the Isle of Man TT races. On 3rd September 1939 she was requisitioned by the British government, who initially retained her as a merchant ship, but by May 1940 she was being used to evacuate refugees from Holland and France. During Operation Dynamo she successfully evacuated 1,200 troops on 27th May, the first ship to make a successful round trip. At 5.30am on 29th May, however, she struck a magnetic sea mine in the east channel off Dunkerque Harbour, and sunk within two minutes. Twenty-four of her crew were lost, with thirty-two being rescued. Her helm and figurehead have been recovered and preserved.
