Îïèñàíèå: On 5th October 1918, barely a month before the end of the war and the day before his 30th birthday, famed French fighter pilot Roland Garros was shot down and killed. Operating with Escadrille 26 and flying near Vouziers, his SPAD XIII is believed to have been shot down by a Fokker DVII of Jasta 49 flown by German ace Hermann Habich. Remarkably, the damaged Hispano-Suiza V-8 engine and twin Vickers machine guns of Garros’ SPAD survive and are on display in the Great War Hall at the Mus'ee de l'air et de l'espace.
