Îïèñàíèå: The Antoinette VII was developed from the Antoinette IV, which had ditched whilst attempting to cross the English Channel on 19th July 1909. The Type VII was more powerful and made its first flight only six days later. Unfortunately for Levasseur and his pilot Hubert Latham, the 25th July 1909 was also the day that competitor Louis Bl'eriot successfully made the first crossing of the channel by air and claimed the Daily Mail prize. Two days later Latham attempted the flight anyway but again ditched, this time whilst only a mile away from the English coast. Rescued by battleship HMS Russell and soon repaired, the same machine won a prize for altitude at the following month’s ‘Grande Semaine d'Aviation de la Champagne’ at Reims, reaching a height of 509ft. It also came second in the fastest circuit contest with a speed of 42.8mph. The type went into production, proved popular and continued to set records. In July 1910 Ren'e Labouchere set an endurance record of 4 hours and 19 minutes in his Type VII. This original example is a two-seater built after 1910. It is on display in the Pioneers Hall.
