Q: Why are there two major London railway stations across the road from each other? With a third on the same road further west? A: Two competing commercial rail companies built Kings Cross in 1852; and St Pancras in 1868. Euston, a third company's terminus was opened in 1838. It's approximately 650 metres (710 yards) further west. _____________________________________ As we walked along Euston Road a visitor from the U.S. asked me about the number of terminus stations close together. I knew one part of the answer: competing railway companies in the 19th Century. Later I found a couple of helpful books including: "Railways and the Western European Capitals" by Micheline Nilsen. She gives some history, including the social and economic background. Chapter 2 is London: Wedges into the Slums. Chapter 3 is London: The Euston Road Terminals.
