Описание: On 21 October 2018 Zena and I went to the mosque to hear a talk by John Hinshelwood about Conscientious Objectors in the First World War. John is one of the members of "The Haringey First World War Peace Forum". This small working group of volunteers are researching conscientious objectors in Hornsey, Tottenham and Wood Green (now part of the London Borough of Haringey). ________________________________ In the UK and I imagine elsewhere, there are many events, TV and radio programmes, plays, arts exhibitions, books and publications are now marking the centenary of the First World War. With Armistice Day on 11 November 1911. Perhaps like many other people I think of this as the day that war formally ended. But "Armistice" means a ceasefire. It was an agreement by the warring states to a suspension of hostilities. There have been wars in one or more parts of the world over the past century, with the prospect of many more. Perpetual war, in fact. But if the prospects for peace seem dim, is the aim of armistice more realistic? ___________________________________
