Описание: I doubt that many brewer's draymen (carters) make history. Or are commemorated in plaques. Here's an exception. in 1850, draymen - and other local people - recognised Julius Jacob von Haynau who was visiting London. Von Haynau was an Austrian general, well known for brutally suppressing revolutionary movements in Italy and Hungary in 1848 and later. His military record had given him a number of descriptions including "Austrian Butcher", "Hyena of Brescia" and the "Hangman of Arad". With a far better photo than mine, the website Southwark News describes what happened after a Bankside crowd recognised him. "Nearly all the labourers and draymen ran out with brooms and dirt, shouting out ‘Down with the Austrian butcher’ and other epithets of rather an alarming nature to the marshal.” "A bale of hay was dropped on Haynau’s head before his clothes were ripped off by the furious crowd. He was flogged with brooms so hard that one of them broke across his back, while manure and dirt were thrown. A woman from a nearby building threw a pair of scissors out the window, apparently in an attempt to cut off his moustache." § Read more on Southwark News website. § The Wikipedia page about von Haynau gives a fuller picture of the man. Describing him: "as an aggressive and ruthless commander" ... with a "... reputation for brutality [which] had spread throughout western Europe." Noting also that: "In Brussels, Haynau narrowly escaped mob violence. In London, he was attacked by some draymen from the Barclay & Perkins brewery who threw mud and dung at him and chased him down the Borough High Street, shouting 'Down with the Austrian butcher!'. Adding a reference to a source stating that: "When the Italian revolutionary, Giuseppe Garibaldi, visited England in 1864, he insisted on visiting the brewery to thank the draymen." § Click to view location of the plaque with Google Maps. § Drawing from Wikimedia.
