Описание: 11 August 2018. Walking past St Paul's Cathedral. An attractive and pleasing flowerbed with bedding plants chosen for colour and contrast. Reminded me of an article on 22 June 2018 by Anthony Mills, a guest contributor to the outstanding website: "Inside Croydon". He had a quite contrary view of how a garden grows. Anthony Mills wrote: "We could be on the verge of providing a wildlife haven". Here are excerpts. Please click here to read the full article. "I worked as an NHS [hospital] gardener for 32 years [...] We produced 10,000 wallflowers and 10,000 geraniums each year for annual bedding and had fleets of mowers. "In the latter half of my working life I came to hate and despise the stupid waste and destructiveness of the acres of manicured lawns. "As resources dried up, the mowing schedules stretched, and some places were inadvertently missed. I once found a lawn in June [...] that had been forgotten for some months. [...] I counted 26 plants in flower at once, not including the dozen or so grass species. "It was spectacularly colourful and beautiful, and a pure example of the diversity that has become so damagingly lacking in our industrially farmed countryside." ______________________________ § Click for a virtual birds-eye flight above the streets and alleys north of St Paul's. § A video by the Corporation of London aims as giving an overview of the benefits of green spaces across the whole city. Unfortunately the examples shown focus on Hampstead Heath. I also wonder if anyone who didn't know, would realise that London has one of the most ethnically diverse populations in the world, with approximately one-third of Londoners born outside the UK. § Wikipedia explains the difference between London - the city as a whole - and the Corporation.
