фото: Bins and bags and bus stop in West Green Road

Описание: There were several popular and reasonably-priced restaurants along West Green Road. So it's time Haringey, our London Borough Council grasped that a pile of rubbish bags on the pavement is no way to support local business. Clean streets as you arrive and leave are a vital ingredient in an area's "regeneration". Any developer knows this. They never publish an "artist's impression" of a regeneration scheme which has graffiti, or potholes in the roadway, piles of spilling rubbish, or greasy gloop-stained pavements. (Usually more visible when the rubbish bags are removed.) Haringey needs more staff who contact traders, residents and landlords to encourage, persuade and - when necessary - enforce the rules. This could involve switching resources from mostly redundant and failed regeneration schemes. Plus cutting umpteen pointless regeneration consultancies, and ending subsidies on "meanwhile" businesses. We could focus instead on getting "the basics" right: cleaner streets; catching and warning /fining dumpers. Mending pavements and potholes as early as possible. There are no savings from delay. Cracks and holes don't fill themselves; they get worse and people have accidents. Lots of local businesses - many are small firms - invest their own money and hard work. In the recent past our Council has played favourites and used public adverts, or advertorial by the Comms Team, publicly funded leaflets and the In-House magazine to advertise them. Far better to post personal reviews on local or other websites. Or just tell our friends and neighbours about places we enjoy visiting. Word-of-mouth is often the best publicity.
