Описание: A couple of weeks ago I bought the book The New Poverty by Stephen Armstrong. As a former elected local councillor and someone involved in local politics and campaigns, I want to know what's happening beyond my neighbourhood, my city and out in the wider world. My former colleagues, current Labour councillors on Haringey Council, must discuss and vote on decisions for key areas affecting people's lives. Will they seek out this book and others like it? I don't know, but I'm doubtful. In fact, they don't have to buy Armstrong's book because The Guardian newspaper has already published much of the material. It's a newspaper read by many left-leaning people in the UK. (Those who in the United States might describe themselves as "liberals".) Armstrong does what many investigative journalists have done before. He reads and quotes reports, surveys, statistics and academic papers. But most important, he travels to different parts of Britain, meeting, talking to, and listening to individuals and family who are in poverty. And with people in the agencies trying to help them. He tries to understand and describe what has happened to them and what they face day by day. Will Haringey Council's "leaders" read this book? Will members of our Council's "Comms" team open the pages and think about the implications of what they read? Will any of them feel the slightest twinge of shame about the lies they've been complicit in propagating?
