Anodyne factual background drawn from first list of sources below Before the First World War Britain had a small standing army. Recruitment to the wartime British army initially relied on volunteers. By 1915 greater numbers of troops were needed. In Autumn 1915 a scheme was introduced requiring eligible men to make a public declaration of whether or not they would join the forces.
