Описание: 145 Stoke Newington High Street, Hackney, London N16. Did we go in? Nope. Then why photograph it? Because I liked the frontage with its curly gable, proud windows, putti, and gold lettering. I also appreciate hanging flower baskets. Sam Gelder of the Hackney Gazette did visit, and wrote it up on 20 December 2016. Sam's article mentions up-and-coming bands who once-upon-a-time played in the pub. Mentioning others who may have played; and several more who probably didn't. One regular drinker - since 1975 - told Sam that he: “saw loads of bands here. I can’t remember who they were though – they were all s**t." Sam couldn't find anyone who remembered the previous Rochester Castle pub, built in 1801 by Richard Payne, who came from Rochester. That replaced an earlier pub on the same site called The Green Dragon. The Historic England website says that: "Permission to erect the [present] pub, on behalf of a Mr Heaven, was sought from the London County Council in November 1892. The Randomness Guide to London (RGL) visited in June 2015. Several other crowd-sourced guides are usually more up-to-date. But the RGL has its own quirky style. I like that too. ________________________________ The Rochester Castle public house is nationally listed with Grade II by Historic England, for "its special architectural or historic interest". The expert entry on its website is very detailed and informative. Here's the link on 31 August 2017. As well as mentioning "frolicking putti" and "Mr Heaven", I enjoyed its description of this building as: "a characteristic and exuberantly decorated pub from the height of the 'Gin Palace' phase of pub building." So Hackney has not only the safekeeping of a special architectural, historic and exuberant building, it should also treasure a palace.
