Описание: One of the photos I took at a march and demonstration on 3 July 2017 in Wood Green. This was a protest against the plans of the right-wing leaders of Haringey Council and their vile HDV - the so-called "Haringey Development Vehicle". This is a large scale plan to destroy thousands of homes and hundreds of businesses in the poorer parts of our Borough. I may be wrong, but so far I have not been able to locate a single address where a current Haringey councillor's home is scheduled for demolition within the HDV. The homes subject to the HDV are shown on Haringey's maps by red lines. This "red-lining" is done by clever and professional people - the planners. They, following the wishes of the politicians in charge, have decided that parts of other people's neighbourhoods should "benefit" from Lendlease and their miraculous and wonderful HDV regeneration improvement plans. I'm sure it is an entirely inexplicable coincidence that none of Haringey's elected councillors - grand, self-important and privileged civic dignitaries that many of them are - will suffer any ill-effects from the HDV scheme. Their homes won't be blighted. Nor will they feel anxiety about a future that includes fear of eventual eviction and demolition. Those councillors are unlikely to find the HDV a problem in selling or letting their own home. Nor borrowing against its value. They can remain confident about making future plans which involve for example, their children's schooling, or supporting their elderly parents. I doubt that Councillors making the HDV decisions will be living - perhaps for years - next to building sites; breathing dust, and suffering noise and disruption as their neighbourhood is destroyed. On the contrary those councillors who own homes may well find their own properties rising in value. "Uplift" is the term the property speculators are fond of using. It seems only the "little people" within the red lines who need to worry about the downside of such schemes. _______________________________ § * To be fair, not every Haringey elected councillor owns their own home. And also as far as I know, few of them own or have an interest in a second home; for example in another city or another country. § Wikipedia page on Redlining. § In the U.S. Leona Helmsley was infamous for her comment: "We don't pay taxes. Only the little people pay taxes"
