Описание: What's this interesting looking structure? An online search suggested an intriguing answer.
"The smaller hub next to the 639 Centre is our sister shed: Tottenham's Living Room."
So it was three things: a shed; a hub; and "Tottenham's Living Room". (Source: The 639 Centre Website accessed 1 June 2017.)
The 639 Centre website told a positive upbeat story. Official propaganda usually does often does. Sometimes it's not untrue. I took these quotes from that website on 1 June 2017. (Please note: The webpage was not dated but included: "content © 639 2013)
"Inspired by City Hall's London's Living Room project, Tottenham's Living Room provides space for charities, third sector organisations and community groups from all over Tottenham to meet, work and deliver their services from.
"Tottenham's Living Room is a key part of 639's commitment to showcasing the best of what Tottenham has to offer. In the past two years, local charities and community groups have used this space for meetings, volunteer training sessions, mentoring and employment related activities.
“The hub, just off the main High Road in Tottenham and next to the 639 centre, provides a flexible space to suit all needs. Previously, it has hosted art exhibitions, crafts markets, campaign launches and has been used as a pop up playground for under five's."
Architects Gort Scott website
I also found the website of Gort Scott the architects who designed it. Their webpage was dated 2012. It includes nine photos, three of which show people outside the building.
Gort Scott called it "Tottenham Public Room" and described it as "a new community hub". They tell us:
"With a modest budget [lb150000] and only 5 weeks on site, an inviting, practical and adaptable sequence of outdoor and indoor public spaces on the high street was delivered."
Unfortunately their webpage also included the misleading and inaccurate statement that: "639 Tottenham High Road, [is] a Listed building that was burnt-out during the riots of Summer 2011. "
I don't know who told Gort Scott this lie. But I had photos from outside the building taken by a local resident immediately after the Tottenham riot. I'd also spoken to Sheila Peacock, a local resident and elected local councillor, who had been allowed inside 639 after the riot. So decided to make a Freedom of Information Act request. This disclosed that although 639 High Road suffered serious damage, it was nothing like the "burnt-out" buildings along High Road Tottenham.
