Описание: It's not enough to build a block of flats. They now have to be "apartments". As you see, when completed, these will be "contemporary" and "selected". They've been under construction for some five years. Which is appalling. Because in London as elsewhere there's a housing crisis, growing homelessness and a desperate need for affordable new homes. Although these days there's no certainty that new homes will be genuinely affordable by local residents. Google Street View shows that in July 2014, the work on Brook Place seemed to be making progress. Then appeared to stop for some time. Though activity has resumed. The block has also changed its name. Before the billboards outside annonced 'Elgin Place'. I guessed - perhaps wrongly - that Elgin was originally selected to suggest a Scottish link, given that it was on the corner of the High Road and Scotland Green. Or perhaps it was touch of classy, a reference to Bruce Castle, Tottenham's only Grade l listed historic building with links to the Scottish Bruce Clan (Clann Brus) once royal family and still Earls of Elgin. (Please see below.) In any case, the pleasant name 'Brook Place' is more grounded. The Moselle Brook runs beneath the road nearby. _____________________________________ § British History Online shows ownership of the medieval manor of Tottenham passing among feudal families with lords, ladies, earls, dukes and knights owning lands in Tottenham. ("Seized of" was the historical term for possessing freehold land.) Tottenham has many streets named after "noble" families who once owned extensive property here. (And elsewhere in the UK.) Some attempts have been made to supplement this with names of others who weren't wealthy aristos. § This particular site was a former Government Job Centre. Originally these were known as a "Labour Exchange". Later rebranded as "Job Centre Plus". There are now fashionable arts venues with 'factory' and 'workshop' in their names. Some former "Warehouse Districts" are even more sought after. Blocks of flats may be named - sometimes tenuously - with trades once carried on in a neighbourhood. Though I doubt that somewhere there are luxury flats apartments called 'Job Centre Tower'. Or 'Labour Exchange Village'.
