Описание: An important book which helps to explain what's being done to us in Tottenham. Naomi Klein begins "The Shock Doctrine" by describing how in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina there was talk about "clean sheets", and "some very big opportunities". What were these opportunities which seemed to ignore the fact that hundreds of people in New Orleans had died and thousands were made homeless? The answer: a blank slate to impose radical right-wing experiments on schools and housing, for example. This is what many of us have feared in Tottenham since the 2011 riot, when our right-wing led council accepted and began carrying-out the recommendations in a report by Stuart Lipton, a property developer. Stuart Lipton was appointed by Boris Johnson - the former Mayor of London. So the Lipton Report had the power to frame the problems and the solutions. It has now led to a plan which involves the potential destruction of several thousand local Council-owned homes. Maslow's Hammer In a similar way this also illustrated a phenomenon sometimes called "Maslow's Hammer". (Also "The Law of the Instrument"). This suggests that people with particular knowledge and skills and a specialised "toolbox" tend to believe that those skills and tools are what's needed to solve any problem presented. Again to give examples from after the Tottenham Riot, we heard mentoring agencies suggesting a need to fund more mentors. Trainers proposed more training. Therapists came to offer therapy. We had a major architectural practice who came for a while and told us that architecture saves cities. Of course, some of the skills and "solutions" do have important roles to play. The problem comes when one or two of these purported "benefactors" have the power to define the agenda and control the resources. They can then impose those actions and policies which they believe will work. That's what happened when property developer Stuart Lipton proposed that Tottenham needed property development.
