Описание: 4 March 2017. In Tavistock Square, London WC1. The quotation from Aneurin Bevan on the banner becomes ever more relevant as the myths of the market take deeper root. Zena has a 1976 paperback of his book "In Place of Fear", originally published in 1952. I hadn't read before. The cover is curving a little and the pages are turning brown. It seems that Nye Bevan saw the book as a series of notes to be rewritten later at greater length. But he died in July 1960. I started with Chapter Five on the NHS - Britain's National Health Service which began in 1947/8. The NHS is seen by many people as Nye Bevan's greatest achievement. In the book he wrote that the right-wing opponents of the NHS knew even in the first few years that: "... it was already popular with the people. If the Service could be killed they wouldn't mind, but they would wish it be done more stealthily and in such a fashion that they would not appear to have the responsibility". That appears to be very much the case nearly sixty years later. ______________________________ § Wikipedia entry for Aneurin Bevan. § The Socialist Health Association has Chapter Five on its website § "In Place of Fear: Narrowing health inequalities". A think piece by Prof Danny Dorling in May 2013, building on the work in his book: "Unequal Health: The Scandal of Our Times".
