June 6th 1944." The Falkland Gardens At the eastern end of Gosport High Street looking out over Portsmouth Harbour. Near the Gosport Ferry Terminal. Gardens and Esplanade built from 1922-1924 as a Government funded public works job creation scheme. Named originally after a local elected councillor, they were later known as 'Ferry Gardens'. Then renamed 'Falkland Gardens' in 1984 after the Falklands War. Redesign of the entire Esplanade area was completed in 2000 when the National Lottery funded a new promenade and a new design for the Gardens. § Read more on the Gosport Borough Council website. § The Wayback machine has archived lots of the usual upbeat cliches from the Millennium Commission about "renaissance" from "exciting" and "legacy" projects.
