Описание: 13 December 2017. St Pancras International, Railway Station The blurry figure hurried into my camera frame before I noticed. Try again? No. People rushing for a train or to meet family and friends, isn't that what main stations are for? Welcome in. The signboard has several welcomes. To a national and international port of entry and exit? Or to a shopping mall? The second option seems to turn major stations into copies of airports and department stores which franchise their space. When I was a boy, announcements and indicator boards in major railway stations were future promises of "travel as adventure *. Especially the names of what felt to me like faraway cities which for many years I'd see only in films. Boat trains to Paris; sleeper to Edinburgh; The platform for trains to Harwich and North Sea ferries to the Hook of Holland. _________________________________ § The shortest distance London to Paris is 214 miles = 344 km. This is air travel distance. (What used to be called :"as the crow flies".) City centre to city centre by Eurostar train: 2 hours 16 minutes for non-stop trains. London - Brussels: 2 hours 1 minute. Edinburgh-London 332 miles=535 km (as the crow flies.) By road 414 miles=666 km § *The phrase "travel as adventure" taken from an article by historian & train enthusiast, Tony Judt: The Glory of the Rails. New York Review of Books 23 December 2010 § The following month a second article by Prof Judt: Bring Back the Rails. New York Review of Books 13 January 2011. § An affectionate but challenging comment by Daniel Judt: Going Nowhere. 'The Point' magazine 2017. He is one of the late Professor Judt's sons.
