Описание: i went to bethlehem for a few hours. the town is really close to jerusalem--really just 10 km or so. it would probably be a jerusalem suburb if it weren't for the separation barrier. i took a city bus from the old city to the crossing. this is the entrance to the crossing point between jerusalem (i.e. the area that israelis consider to be part of israel proper) and the west bank (i.e. the area that is currently officially under control of the palestinian authority, but is also technically still occupied by the israeli military. also, this is all--even this side (the "israel side") of the barrier is technically in the west bank, because this patch of land was controlled by jordan prior to 1967. this just goes to show how difficult it is even to describe a place without taking a side. in any case, the separation barrier, or "wall", or "fence" or whatever, is really two different walls with a military/border crossing area in between. it was really quite easy for me to pass through with my american passport. but the palestinians who were walking with me had to show a lot more papers and were subject to more thorough searches (they didn't search me at all)
