фото: Capilla Mayor (Main Chapel) of Mosque-Cathedral (Mezquita-Catedral) in C'ordoba, Spain

Описание: Heretically or not, I thought often of MaribelsGuide's term for the Segovia cathedral -- "the typical Spanish 'architectural mess'" -- while roaming this better-known landmark in C'ordoba. It's a mosque, no question -- Abd al-Rahman built it in the eighth century after the Islamic conquest of the Visigoths -- but one that has been uninhibitedly Christianized since the thirteenth century Reconquista. The centuries-separate styles don't mesh gracefully, or try to. Follow the little blue Google Street View lines _inside_ the Mosque-Cathedral and you may see my point. Most of the interior is dominated by the columns and arches of the mosque prayer hall. Here and there, however, and in gated alcoves: thoroughly Christian artwork and capillas, like this, the Mosque-Cathedral's biggest. Me thinks the little Google Street View doughboy was allowed access to the Mosque-Cathedral in off hours. I explored with goodly hordes of fellow tourists, expect that others will, too.
