фото: Shanghai Maglev

Описание: Snapped at the Longyang Road station in the wee hours, before my return trip to Pudong International for the flight to SFO. "What was the highlight of your trip?" asked my sister. I _had_ to pick my maglev ride, even though I might call for the scalp of anyone suggesting a maglev locally, and suspect that it's been a money flush for the Chinese. I am a transit aficionado, as is painfully obvious to anyone perusing my photo collection. This is one of the few operational maglevs on terra firma. Anywhere. What transit type wouldn't enjoy a ride? It hit 301 kmh -- around 187 miles per hour -- traveling from and to Pudong, and veritably bristled with untapped power while zipping along the track. I felt like I was still in a jumbo jet. Most of the seats around me were empty. When I disembarked at Longyang and hiked into the subway station, I encountered a #2 subway so jammed-to-bursting with working stiffs that I couldn't get on. The #2 line also goes to the airport. I'll bet that many in Shanghai would have preferred to see that maglev money used on a train they ride every day. But, hey: you build a maglev, Tim's going to ride it. No apologies.
