фото: Scooter and bicycle commuters in Shanghai

Описание: I put motorized two wheelers and pedal-powered two wheelers in very different categories, but the distinction in Shanghai seemed less significant. This is as good a time as any to offer a few choice words about Shanghai driving customs: if a car or motorcycle can take a chunk out of your thigh, well, it just might, red light or green light or no light. You risk an early rendezvous with the Grim Reaper every time you step into the street here. I _mean_ it, and if you visit with kids, I mean it times ten. Example: The light's green, you obviously -- obviously! -- have the right of way, and the approaching driver can see you at least as well as his steering wheel or the bobblehead toy on his dash. (If they have those in China.) Do _not_ trust him to slow down. Keep your eyes on that car until he stops.
