фото: Subway car interior

Описание: Typical interior of a Tokyo subway car. Look at that spotless, Cadillac-ready upholstery, fellow Americans! Look at those spotless, graffiti-less walls! Share my shame. That's how I felt, as I rode the rails in Tokyo and searched the cars for the speck of anti-social graffiti I never saw, not once: ashamed. My guide Hiro attributed the good treatment of shared public facilities to "Japanese manner." I didn't stay in Tokyo long enough to form an opinion. If he's right, I hope the "Japanese manner" can be bottled and distributed in a fine aerosol spray in buses and trains here. I did spot some graffiti next to the tracks on the N'EX ride out of town. Never in the trains. The young lady at right stepped into the frame as I clicked the shutter, and gives me an excuse to yak about face masks. I'd guess that they were worn by twenty percent or more of the riders around me. Some Japanese wear them when they're of utterly no use (while hiking near the Imperial Palace, for instance).
