Описание: Bjorgo, Norway. A Class 86 DMU on the now closed Valdres Line/Valdresbana. The entire length of the Valdres Line was 108 kilometers. It connected the rural areas of Land and Valdres to the main Norwegian railway network. There is no regular traffic on the line, although the 48 km between Eina to Dokka is still permitted for trains and considered part of the national rail network. In 2002, the tracks were lifted between Bjorgo and Fagernes and converted into a cycling route. The line was closed on 1 January 1989. The decision to close the line was controversial, and I personally believe that keeping the line open would have benefit the local economy as well as boost for rural areas experiencing depopulation. Closure of some stops and upgrading of the track would make the journey time compete with the slightly more direct coach service to/from Oslo. The coach line (alongside higher car ownership), which opened in 1985 contributed to an annual decrease by nearly 20,000 passengers. An airport was opened in 1987 to add to the misery. The airport has since been threatened with closure several times, and only has a few departures each day. The Valdres Line is a scenic stretch, and even in Norway we have examples (especially the Flam Line) of railways being run in the interests of both tourists and local passengers. The total population in the municipalities neighbouring the northern part of the line totals around 14 to 15,000 people, a much higher number than that of the Flam Line/Flamsbana, a line which is still operating. The former terminus at Fagernes is located near major areas for hiking and winter sports. There even used to be direct trains from Fagernes to Stockholm. The narrow-mindedness of politicians in the late 1980s are to blame for the closures, in my opinion.
