Aunque se construy'o un canal artificial para conectarlo al cuerpo de agua mayor, la conexi'on se hab'ia perdido ya en 1999, debido al cada vez m'as acusado descenso de las aguas. El Mar de Aral del Norte, se mantiene estable e incluso ha crecido estos a~nos gracias a la construcci'on del Dique Kokaral. Por el contrario, el Mar de Aral Sur ha sido abandonado por motivos econ'omicos y puede que termine sec'andose totalmente. It split from the South Aral Sea in 1987–1988 as water levels dropped due to river diversion for agriculture. The Aral Sea began shrinking in the 1960s, when the Soviet Union decided that the two rivers feeding it, the Amu Darya and the Syr Darya, would be diverted to irrigate cotton and food crops in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
