: I'm going through boxes of stuff in the garage my folks saved for me. This is my award from the Mandarin Speech Contest for Foreigners in Taiwan, held in 1989. I got 5th place out of 30+ participants. Not too shabby, considering I'd been studying Chinese only a little over a year at that point. The contestants who placed ahead of me had 3-4 years on me.
