Описание: Ancient Greek and Roman public spaces, cemeteries and sanctuaries of the gods were filled with bronze and marble sculptures. Bronze was preferred by some ancient sculptors because its properties enabled them to create more dynamic poses. Over the centuries almost all the bronze statues were melted down for re-use, so this is a rare survival. The bronze (copper-alloy) Roman statue was perhaps inspired by an earlier Greek prototype, but the subject is unknown. The eyes would originally have been realistically formed using silver and glass or precious stones. The lips and nipples were inlaid with copper to give them a red hue. The statue was cast in several pieces which were then assembled mechanically. The entire surface was then polished, concealing the joins. 1st century BC, from Ziphteh, near ancient Athribis (modern Tell Atrib) in the Nile Delta, northern Egypt GR 1840,0401.1 (Bronze 828)
