I am more than you perceive, I will not submit to your ideals, I do not need your liberation, I am reconstructions anguish 2018, Azraa Motala Azraa Motala, a multidisciplinary artist from Lancashire, merges the western tradition of oil painting with South Asian visuals. Using both photography and painting as forms of self-expression, she untangles culturally-inherited expectations and explores her own identity as a young British South Asian Muslim woman. In this painting, she looks at dress as a marker of identity in a society where South Asian Muslim women are often considered pawns in political discourse or portrayed through a singular stereotype. On loan from Azraa Motala I often failed to see myself and people like me represented on museum and gallery walls. Through large-scale oil painting, I wanted to subvert the dominant narrative of Eurocentric male power in portraiture and to raise questions regarding the innate messages of knowledge, subjugation and status visible in our public collections, as well as the stories left untold.
