Описание: The Museum was founded in 1961 to showcase American decorative arts and to dispel stereotypes of American culture. It houses the finest examples of American decorative arts, quilts and folk art, and Dallas Pratt's map collection one of the great collections of Renaissance maps in the world. The American Museum & Gardens was originally the achievement of Dr. Dallas Pratt (an American psychiatrist and collector) and John Judkyn (a British born antiques dealer, who had become a United States citizen). They were an Anglo-American couple, partners in both their personal and professional lives, and were supported by Nick Bell- Knight (a furniture restorer employed at nearby Freshford Manor, Judkyn's business base in Britain), and Ian McCallum, the Museum's first Director. Collecting for the Museum began in earnest in 1958, facilitated by Judkyn's business contacts. Each piece testified to the artistry of Americans and how these people had lived in the past. Panelling and floors were also shipped over to Britain, enabling period rooms from demolished buildings in America to be reconstructed within the spacious interiors of Claverton Manor. Many decades on, the American Museum & Gardens remains the only museum outside the United States to showcase the decorative arts of America. Why is there an American Museum in Bath? John and Dallas already had a home at Freshford Manor near Bath, which John had made as a base for his antique exporting business. The best sources of antiques at the time came from the southwest, and the proximity to Bristol's port made shipping them to New York easier. It made sense to set up their museum in the Bath area. The plan was to locate the museum in the middle of Bath, but they could not find a suitable city-centre premise. In 1958, Claverton Manor was put up for sale. The Manor House was built in 1820 and had been let and sold to a number of families until the 1950s, when Bath Domestic College used it as accommodation for its students. The lease expired and the owners decided to sell the house. In addition to a fine exterior and magnificent setting, Claverton Manor had room for a far larger collection than John and Dallas had originally planned. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Museum_and_Gardens
