Описание: So begins the foreword to America in Crisis, conceived in 1968 for Magnum Photos by the photographer Charles Harbutt and Lee Jones, the agency's New York bureau chief. Featuring the work of 18 photographers, it explored the myth of the American Dream versus reality on the ground in a time of great change and division as the country prepared for a pivotal presidential election. The project was presented in 1969 as a book, exhibition, short film and experimental installation. Updated with images from the past decade with an emphasis on 2020 and early 2021, this new version of America in Crisis is an opportunity to examine a nation reflected across two critical moments in American history. Expanding on the visual and conceptual narratives from the 1968 project while increasing the pool of contributors, the myth of American exceptionalism is confronted through images that have documented the social, political and cultural issues separated by five decades. The juxtaposition of historical and contemporary work on similar themes also provides a lens through which to examine the shifts in documentary practice and image culture that have occurred in the intervening period. An interactive installation in the Small Gallery uses the exhibition content to explore image classification and consumption.
