Описание: Boris Souvarine Papers - Soviet Russia Photos graduateinstitute.ch/home/research/library/archives/boris... Notes: This document is a photographic reproduction of a portrait of Lenin, made by Russian avant-garde artist Yuri (Georges) Annenkov (1889-1974) in Moscow, 1921. It is part of a small collection, gathered by Boris Souvarine, presumably consisting of a series of portraits of Bolshevik leaders drawn by this artist. As a French delegate to the IIIrd International, Boris Souvarine met several times Lenin, about whom he wrote that he was a comrade "simple, modest, friendly, attentive to others' opinions" (quoted by Jean-Louis Pann'e in Boris Souvarine: le premier d'esenchant'e du communisme. Our translation). A student of Felix Vallotton in Paris (1911-1914), Yuri Annenkov was initiated to futurism and cubism. Back in Russia, he belonged to the avant-garde artists, among whom were Larionov, Malevitch, Tatline, Kandinsky. Close to the Bolsheviks, he executed portraits of the Lenin, Trotski, Stalin, Zinoviev, Radek, Gorki, etc. In 1920, he was appointed professor to the Vkhutemas (state art and technical schools) created by Lenin, and charged with the theatrical design of two mass spectacles: "The Hymn to Liberated Labour" and "The Storming of the Winter Palace". His collection of political portraits is gathered in Portraits, first published in Saint-Petersburg in 1922, and prefaced by Anatoli Lunatcharski, Soviet People's Commissar of Education responsible for culture and education. In 1924, Yuri Annenkov left Russia for Germany, then France, where he worked as a prolific theater decorator. The back of the document reads: "L'ART EN PHOTOGRAPHIE - Studio Yves Hervochon" (Paris).
